Tom & Jerry complete 70 years of rat race in the show business

They've been plotting, conniving and running after each other's tail for 70 years, and they still manage to draw guffaws from a global audience, which surveys show comprises as many adults as children.
Tom and Jerry, the most loved cat and mouse duo in the world, have turned 70, having lived through bouts of politically correct sanitising.
We turn back the clock and trace the evolution of the cartoon series that was named one of the greatest TV shows of all time by Time magazine in 2000.
In the late 1930s, William Hanna, an experienced director, and Joseph Barbera, a storyboard writer at the MGM cartoon studio, created a cat- and mouse toon called Puss Gets the Boot.
The precursor to Tom's character was Jasper, a gray tabby cat - and Jerry didn't even have a name.
Puss Gets The Boot was previewed and released without much fanfare on February 10, 1940, after which Hanna and Barbera went on to direct other shorts that had nothing to do with cats and mice.
In 1941, the cartoon became a favourite of cinema theatre owners and of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which nominated the film for an Oscar. But it lost out to another MGM cartoon, Rudolph Ising's The Milky Way. This is when producer Fred Quimby, who ran the MGM animation studio, asked Hanna and Barbera to focus on a series featuring the cat and mouse. The Tom and Jerry series went into production with The Midnight Snack in 1941, and Hanna and Barbera rarely directed anything but the cat-and-mouse cartoons for the rest of their tenure at MGM. Tom and Jerry was in a controversy in 2006, when the UK channel Boomerang announced plans to edit those cartoons where the characters were seen to be smoking in a manner that made the action look "acceptable or glamourised". This followed a complaint from a viewer that the cartoons were not appropriate for younger viewers, and a subsequent investigation by the media watchdog OFCOM. In India, Tom and Jerry, untouched by any wave of political correctness, has been a big hit on Cartoon Network, which has been airing the series since its launch in 1995. The show is now available not only in English and Hindi, but also in Tamil and Telugu.
"Tom and Jerry is a piece of art that is created just once," says the channel's South Asia programming director, Krishna Desai. "Even after 70 years, it is growing more popular than ever. And our surveys show that nearly half of Tom and Jerry viewers are adults." Cartoon Network now plans to air special shows throughout April to mark the show's 70th anniversary. " We have 160 Tom and Jerry titles ( episodes) and six feature films. It is difficult to describe in words why it is so popular among all age groups. But it is working beautifully," Desai says.

CERN scientists closer to understanding Big Bang

A scientist pauses before the launch at the CMS experience control room at the European...Enlarge Photo A scientist pauses before the launch at the CMS experience control room at the European...Slideshow: World in pics: March 30 Scientists smashed sub-atomic particles into each other with record energy on Tuesday, aiming to recreate conditions just after the Big Bang that gave rise to the universe 13.7 billion years ago.
The experiment at the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) drew applause from the 80 scientists in the tracking room at the sprawling research complex on the French-Swiss border.
"It just shows what we can do in pushing knowledge forward on where we came from, how the early universe evolved," CERN Director-General Rolf Heuer said.
The collisions, the high point so far of the 10 billion Swiss franc ($9.4 billion) experiment, which will continue for years, marked a significant step forward for physics and could be seen as a giant leap for mankind, he said, speaking in a video relay from Tokyo.
CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's biggest machine, slammed beams of particles together at a record collision energy of 7 tera-electron volts (TeV) or seven billion billion electron volts -- three and a half times faster than previously achieved in a particle accelerator.
STEP INTO UNKNOWN
Data from the collisions over the coming years will be analysed by thousands of scientists around the world linked by a computer network known as the Grid to gain insights into the nature of matter and the origins of stars and planets.
"This is a step into the unknown. We are doing something that no one has done before. We hope we find things that are really new," said CERN research director Sergio Bertolucci.
"There are known unknowns out there, like dark matter and new dimensions about which we hope to learn. But it is possible that we will find some unknown unknowns which could be hugely important for mankind. With the LHC, we have the tool that we need."
The collisions took place at a nano-fraction of a second slower than the speed of light in the LHC's 27 km (16.8 mile) tunnel about a hundred metres (330 feet) below ground.
CERN scientists expect the project to lift the veil on some of the mysteries of the cosmos -- how matter was converted to mass after the fireball of the Big Bang and what is the dark, or invisible, matter that makes up an estimated 25 percent of the universe.
"In the course of 2010 and 2011 we will be compiling the data and we expect to make real discoveries," Oliver Buchmueller, one of the key figures in the experiment, told Reuters. "By the end of 2010 we think we will find evidence of dark material and confirmation that it is there and what it is."
Buchmueller said he thought the experiment would only find the theoretical particle known as the Higgs boson after 2013, when the collider is boosted to collision energy of 14 TeV.
The Higgs boson, named after the Scottish physicist who proposed it three decades ago to explain the origin of mass in the universe, is believed to have made possible the emergence of stars, planets and eventually life from the matter that spewed out of the Big Bang.
The experiment was delayed for a few hours by technical glitches with the power supply and an over-sensitive magnet safety system. This led the physicists to suspend the mega-power particle collisions.
After the problems arose as beams were injected into the collider in the early morning, CERN officials were quick to dismiss any suggestion that it was a repeat of a major incident in September 2008 that seriously damaged parts of the experiment and delayed the full launch of the project until now.

Kickball Looks to Punt Foursquare’s iPhone App to the Curb

Kickball Looks to Punt Foursquares iPhone App to the CurbKickball, a third-party Foursquare iPhone app/client now available in the App Store, is trying to be a slicker and more complete social location app than we’ve seen so far.

Currently built with using the Foursquare API and GeoAPI (curiously not using SimpleGeo as GeoAPI was acquired by Twitter), Kickball has plans future plans to integrate Gowalla and Brightkite, and according to their press release will also have, “Quick Check-in, enhanced Twitter integration with photos, new badges, and ‘King of the Hood”‘ (whatever that is…we’re guessing it’s a pan-mayorship kind of thing).

Two New iPhones Incoming

Two New iPhones IncomingAccording to the Wall Street Journal, two new iPhones are coming out this year, and one of them might be headed for Verizon.

This would solve the largest lingering problem that the iPhone has, its beholden status to AT&T, a carrier that many in the United States find to be lacking in both reliability and speed.

The end of AT&T iPhone exclusivity would be a massive bump for the iPhone ecosystem as a whole, especially in its cut throat war with Android.

Of course, what upgrades we are to see in the new generation is up for debate. Everyone has their own personal favorite horse in the feature race, and we are all hoping that our own choice makes it.

Congress Calls For Google Buzz Investigation

Congress Calls For Google Buzz InvestigationFollowing up on a complaint letter sent by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) to the FTC, eleven members of the House of Representatives have written to John Leibowitz, chairman of the FTC, over Google’s rule as a potential curator of private data.

The main point of the complaint is over what we all were all railing about when Buzz launched: it was opt-in, not opt-out, it auto-followed people for you, and more importantly, using Buzz disclosed your email on a very public scale.

In their letter, the Representatives in question write that Buzz “could inadvertently reveal a journalist’s confidential sources or disclose information about a consumer’s medical history, political views, or whereabouts.

Send Files Over Gchat on iGoogle and Orkut

Send Files Over Gchat on iGoogle and OrkutGoogle announced today via the Google Talk blog that the next big feature to grace the Gchat instant messaging service available to Gmail users will be the ability to send files.

I tested this out, and sure enough, on the iGoogle page, I can choose to send files to other people using Gchat. However, this feature only works with Orkut and iGoogle, and that means on both ends.

For example, right now if you try to send a file from iGoogle to someone using Gchat through the Gmail web interface, you’ll get an error message saying that the other person isn’t using a supported client.

Crazy About Check-ins? Now We Have CheckinMania

Crazy About Check ins? Now We Have CheckinManiaA new visualization mashup of social location service check-ins just launched last night called Checkinmania.

Checkinmania right now displays recent check-in data from Foursquare and Gowalla (looks like Brightkite and Yelp data is coming soon too), and does it in a smart way – around a point that you choose on a Google Map. This is smart as proximity really matters, and smart apps such as Instant Tweetup are focusing proximity.

Check Out The Source Code From The Foursquare For Windows Phone 7 App

Check Out The Source Code From The Foursquare For Windows Phone 7 App Because you know that you just have to get your hands into the thick of it, check out the source code the for the much praised Windows Phone 7 Series Foursquare application.

The company behind the app, Touchality, calls it emphatically an alpha release, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. However, the application has some of the best Foursquare data usage (heatmaps are amazing) on any mobile device that we have seen. Alpha or not, we like it.

You can grab the code here. Screenshots in case you missed them after the jump.

Metasearch Engine Qrobe.it Grows Itself Into A Full Search Experience

Metasearch Engine Qrobe.it Grows Itself Into A Full Search ExperienceWhen we first covered Qrobe.it (pronounced “krobe it”), we liked its fresh design and excellent combination of Bing and Google results. What it lacked, however, was features.

The team has knuckled down over the past weeks and has upgraded Qrobe.it into my favorite search experience.

Qrobe.it, being a metasearch engine, fuses results from other search engines to bring a more complete view of what is the best result sheet for any search term. Bing and Google, being far and away the two best search engines today, are combined by Qrobe.it, with special adjustments, for a fair and balanced (wink) look at the internet and its vast information.

Check.in Tries To Rule All Checkins, But Takes Some of the Fun Out of the Game

Check.in Tries To Rule All Checkins, But Takes Some of the Fun Out of the GameStill in very limited beta, Check.in, a new app from the creators of Brightkite, aspires to be the “checkin to rule them all”, and while it shows lots of promise, it also unintentionally exposes why this kind of service might not catch on as well as others have predicted.

Check.in was developed with the aim of eliminating the need to check into numerous social location services at every new stop when out and about. While not a perfect cross-section of humanity, during a panel on location at SXSW, we stood up and asked the audience how many people used two or even three check-in apps, and a very high percentage of hands went up, so there is potentially some demand among the early adopter set for this kind of app.

What Comes Of Tomorrow

Joy is what fills the heart of they
which hold within the mysteries of a friend
A passion unknown unto words
Within them fall the tears of all things they endure as one
And from their eyes diamonds fall,
So precious every one
Dear within, the memories they caress with sorrow
And gather them today, for what may come of tomorrow
Priceless
Priceless ever are these moments that we spend with those so dear
Comforting now to know that they are near
Yet there comes a day when they see the eagle soar
And feel within their hearts
A passion so much more
As we stand beside them when that gleam glows in their eyes
What comes of tomorrow
My friend's lost paradise
And though a distant barrier wells up within the heart
There is a joy inside
To know the joy of a dawning start
Standing there beside them on that road to paradise
We say farewell and weep
Knowing they must also compromise
And so we hold them close and whisper in their ear
Please take with you these memories.
Then from the eyes,
Your tear.

Up In The Sky

When you are down
And you want to get high,
Just take a good look
Up in the sky.

What you will see
Are the stars above,
And all you need
Is to proclaim your love.

Who you will find
And see so clear,
Are friends in mind
You want to hold near.

Whenever you need them
Just look up high,
Call their name
And see them fly.

Every friend you meet
Owns a star
And you can see them
No matter how far.

Whenever you are down
And want to get high,
Just take a good look
Up in the sky.

Serenity

As I look
Beyond the ripples of my reflections
To examine my inner self;
The ripples begin to fade . . .
As the reflection lays beside me
Grasping my hand,
The inner warmth shields me
And the vision of my reflection appears
I see you. My Friend.

For My Bestest Friend

Friendship is something to hold on to
But for me that's not the case
Cause I don't feel I need to keep
Something that can't be erased

I am sure of what I have
Cause with you I have no doubt
For what we've built, can't ever fail
It's what I care about

I find it hard to describe
This thing that we share
Especially when there's nothing else
That ever could compare

Others always know
That together we will be
For there can never be another
"Tani and Kerrie"

Those two words, known all over
Might as well be one
Cause without a Kerrie, there is no Tani
I'm sorry, it just can't be done

For you're the "U", and I'm the "S"
And forever that will be
Cause together we make "US", and so
YOU COMPLETE ME!!

On The Wings of A Butterfly

Your friendship is special
Like the flowers that bloom,
Or when a butterfly emerges
From within its cocoon...

You remind me of that butterfly,
Loving and free,
Bright and colorful,
For the world to see...

We will share sunshine and rainbows;
Sometimes, the rain and the snow;
We'll stand together through it,
While the cold winds blow...

When the time is right,
We won't stop to ask "Why?"
Our friendship will take flight
On the wings of a butterfly ...

The Way It Should Be

Solitude have I to endure,
seemingly held with disclosure.
A fellow left astray,
as yet from yesterday.

Flashing your dainty, disarming smile,
warms my heart every once in a while.
Our longtime kinship
will always bloom with friendship.

It has never been so profound,
a lifetime friend have I found.
Let our friendship be a bond,
which can never be like a dry pond.

Let us not forget the dreams we share,
forever like sisters or brothers we care.
You'll always be a friend to me,
and that's the way it should be.

Follow Me

Take my hand and follow me
to that place I long to be.
Take my hand and trust my way,
in that place forever stay.
Follow me toward the sand;
we'll run and play, hand in hand.
Take my heart and hold it true;
forever I'll stay close to you.
Seize my words and listen well,
then forever I will tell.
Release your heart and feelings too,
just as I will do for you.
Trust your heart and follow me,
to that place we long to be.

Between The Miles

Because existence can become severe
in one day,
just sense me and I'll be there.
In the minds eye,
I'm not so far away.
If you hold out your hand,
in the whispers,
I'll become the zephyr.
and besiege you.
If your eye's upon the stars,
in the crystalline darkness,
I'll become the moon.
And the light shall guide you.
If you rest upon the ground,
in the warmth,
I'll become the grass.
And embrace you.
If you turn outside,
in the wetness,
I'll become the rain.
An upon your forehead, kiss you.
If you free the air,
in the light of day,
I'll become the sun.
And smile for you.

Between the miles-
if you need me.
If you need a friend.
Let me be the friend, I want to be

Dance Upon The Wind.

I wasn't looking for it, but some how it came, and found me.
Before I had a chance to react, it wrapped it's warmth around me.
Like a thief in the night, it has come and gone.
I have nothing, but that vision to reflect upon.

Until chance comes again, I'll let my thoughts dance upon the wind.
All day long, in my mind, I walk love's lonely street.
Like a tired man that longs to sit, but just can't find a seat.
Then, there it was again, up ahead, to light my way.

Only to vanish once more, just like all my yesterdays.
Until chance comes again, I'll let my thoughts dance upon the wind.
I don't know where I'm going, and where I've been isn't much to speak of.
I just know my heart is always showing, leading me to some far off love.

Just when I give up the fight.
Here it comes to make the bad things good, and the wrong things right.
Only to leave me lost and lonely again.
Drifting away as my thoughts dance upon the wind.

It has a name, I think they call it friend.

best friend Poem of the Day - natpin sirantha pattu

What boots it, thy virtue,
What profit thy parts,
While one thing thou lackest,
The art of all arts!
The only credentials,
Passport to success,
Opens castle and parlor,
Address, man, Address.

The maiden in danger
Was saved by the swain,
His stout arm restored her
To Broadway again:

The maid would reward him,
Gay company come,
They laugh, she laughs with them,
He is moonstruck and dumb.

This clenches the bargain,
Sails out of the bay,
Gets the vote in the Senate,
Spite of Webster and Clay;

Has for genius no mercy,
For speeches no heed,
It lurks in the eyebeam,
It leaps to its deed.

Church, tavern, and market,
Bed and board it will sway;
It has no to-morrow,
It ends with to-day.

Scientists have discovered that there is one thing above all else that determines the lasting power of a friendship. Many people guess that it is the ability to communicate that determines the quality of a friendship. In actuality, studies have shown that friends who have the most fun together are most likely to stay together. Fun is a difficult word to define and yet we know when we are having it. It is a difficult thing to predict and yet there are some friends that we have fun with almost every time we get together. Fun is the key factor in a lasting friendship.

Best Friend Poems - Poems about Best Friends - Best poems for machi`s - nanbanu kaga pattu - friendship poem song

Best Friends means different things to different people. Some insist that you can have only one best friend. Others assert that they have best friends for different aspects of their personalities. Whatever the precise definition, your best friend is the person who gets you. They understand who you are and what you are saying. The greatest distance cannot separate best friends. You will always feel a kinship with them, and be able to instantly continue the friendship even after not talking for many years.

Foolproof disposal of expired drugs soon

Expired drugs being seized by police from a

Photo: V. Ganesan Expired drugs being seized by police from a godown at Aravamudhan Garden Street, Egmore in Chennai on Wednesday.
The Health Department will soon introduce a foolproof system for disposing of time-barred drugs, M. Bhaskaran, Director, Directorate of Drug Control, said on Wednesday.
The move follows the seizure of expired drugs that were sent to retail outlets with fake manufacture/expiry dates.

While seven persons were arrested and two surrendered in a city court on Tuesday, special teams were rushed to a neighbouring State to apprehend three prime suspects in the case.
“We have evolved a procedure that will ensure foolproof disposal of time-barred drugs. Because of timely intervention, we have been able to prevent large stocks of expired drugs from reaching the people. Drug Inspectors have been asked to look for three particular medicines that are being circulated with fake dates of manufacture or expiry. Pro-active steps are being taken to expose the entire nexus,” Mr. Bhaskaran told The Hindu on Wednesday.
The Chennai police seized expired drugs worth about Rs.1 crore from a godown here on Wednesday.
The medicines, mostly vitamin supplements in the form of tablets or tonic for pregnant women, were seized from the storage point of Sanjay Kumar, one of the prime suspects wanted in the case pertaining to sale of expired drugs.

“We are following some specific inputs and more seizures will follow soon. This is a very elaborate case and a special team of more than 60 police personnel are involved in the investigation and the arrest of accused persons. The seized medicines are being sent for forensic analysis,” Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said.

Asked if the recent death of a three-year-old girl in Pulianthope allegedly due to consumption of expired drugs was linked to this case, Mr. Rajendran said a Forensic Science Laboratory report was expected in that regard. Information on how and where the suspects managed to procure the expired drugs and who assisted them in circulating them to retail outlets would be known only after the arrest of the main suspects.
According to police sources, police and health officials launched an intensive operation to detect time-barred or spurious drugs across the State. Director-General of Police Letika Saran said instructions had been given to zonal Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police to take appropriate action on complaints preferred by Drug Inspectors.

“This will be a joint operation in coordination with health officials. They (the health department) have listed certain companies indulging in the sale of expired drugs. We are assisting them in taking action against the persons involved,” Ms. Letika Saran added.
